In Europe, a disease is considered rare if no more than 5 per 10,000 inhabitants suffer from this disease. In the USA it is 7.5 per 10,000 inhabitants, in Japan 4 per 10,000 and in Australia 1 per 10,000.

According to projections, 30 million people in Europe alone suffer from a rare disease (RD), around 4 million of them in Germany. 80 percent of all rare diseases are genetic.
